The year of 2020 has not been a good one for my family. Lots of unexpected events that we’ve had to weather through. The worst has been for my husband who became ill while we were on vacation in WI. After we came home, we immediately went to the doctor’s only to find out that his symptoms wouldn’t let him see a doctor with the COVID restrictions. He had to have a Virtual Visit. The doctor suspected COVID. He ordered a test. Fearing the worst, we isolated as a family. The test came back as negative.
Still not feeling well, he went to the ER the next day where he had another COVID test. That was negative. When his doctor heard that, he suspected Jim had pneumonia. He put him on antibiotics for 10 days.
10 days later, Jim wasn’t feeling any better but still couldn’t come into the office for blood tests because of his high fever. Then the doctor suspected Lyme Disease. Put him on an antibiotic for that for 10 days. Still the same. We were able to get his temperature down to 98.6 and I brought him in where they drew 4 vials of blood, a urine sample and a chest X-ray. Still couldn’t find anything and the X-Ray was clear.
Jim said he felt like he had Mono. He had had it in college and he told the doctor. They ran another test for Mono and sure enough it came back positive. It’s very rare to get Mono twice but Jim managed to do it. There is no treatment for it, the body has to work it’s way through the disease. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and it might be necessary to hospitalize him to bring his liver enzymes down.
In the meantime, he’s missed over a month of work. Now, I have to file for Short Term Disability and the Family Medical Leave Act.
But yesterday, his fever went down; his blood sugar was normal and Jim stayed up all day. This morning, his numbers are good and once again no fever. I pray that he is better. He’s lost over 30 pounds with this bout of illness. I’ve never seen him this ill.
